The Bharat Diamond Bourse (BDB), renowned as the world’s largest diamond trading hub, recently served as the backdrop for the launch of The Brahmastra, authored by D. Sivanandhan, IPS (Retd.), former Director General of Police, Maharashtra, and ex-Commissioner of Police, Mumbai. The event underscored BDB’s evolving role as not just a business center but also a platform for cultural and community milestones.
In his book, Mr. Sivanandhan recounts his frontline role in dismantling Mumbai’s organized crime syndicates through the 1990s and early 2000s—a period when the city was reeling from the devastating 1993 serial bomb blasts and rampant mafia-led violence. Taking charge as Joint Commissioner of Police (Crime) in 1998, he spearheaded strategic crackdowns under the Maharashtra Control of Organised Crime Act (MCOCA), detaining over 1,600 criminals and seizing 2,500 illegal weapons. His efforts restored peace to a city once under siege.
The launch drew a host of dignitaries, including BDB President Anoop Mehta, who praised The Brahmastra as both inspirational and impactful, while also acknowledging Mr. Sivanandhan’s contribution to BDB’s own security framework. Vice-President Mehul Shah, in a heartfelt address, described the former DGP as part of the BDB family, also recalling his role in initiating the Roti Bank at the Bourse.
Among the distinguished attendees were GJEPC Chairman Kirit Bhansali, Milan Parikh, Suresh Shah, author Dr. Radha Krishna Pillai, retired DGP Sanjay Saxena, and Deputy Commissioner of Police Manish Kalwania. The ceremony was anchored by Mr. Shrish Inamdar, a retired colleague of Mr. Sivanandhan now associated with BDB, who shared personal insights into his legacy. Members and staff of BDB turned up in large numbers, reflecting the deep respect he continues to command.
With this launch, BDB not only celebrated a compelling personal account of one of India’s most respected police officers but also reinforced its identity as a hub for events that carry cultural and social resonance.
