Japan and the United States are in early discussions to set up a lab-grown diamond manufacturing unit in the US, as part of Japan’s proposed $550 billion overseas investment plan. The facility would focus on producing synthetic diamonds for industrial use, particularly in semiconductors, precision engineering, and advanced manufacturing.

Lab-grown diamonds are increasingly seen as a strategic resource due to their role in high-performance technologies. The talks reflect a broader push by both countries to strengthen supply chain resilience, especially as concerns rise over global reliance on China, which dominates synthetic diamond production and has tightened export controls on key materials.

Sources cited by Reuters suggest the project could be announced among the first initiatives linked to an anticipated visit by Japan’s prime minister to Washington. Companies such as Element Six, the industrial diamond arm of the De Beers Group, are said to be potential participants, while Japanese government-backed financial institutions may support the venture. Discussions are still preliminary, with no formal commitments made so far.
