The implementation of the India-Oman Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA) marks a significant step forward in strengthening commercial ties between the two countries while creating new opportunities for Indian exporters across multiple sectors.
Effective from 1 June 2026, the agreement opens duty-free access for a vast majority of Indian exports entering Oman, enhancing the country's position as an important trade destination for Indian businesses. Beyond improving bilateral trade, the pact also reinforces Oman’s strategic role as a gateway to wider markets across the Gulf region, the Middle East, and East Africa.
For the gem and jewellery sector, the agreement brings immediate advantages. Import duties previously applicable on a range of Indian jewellery products have been removed, improving the competitiveness of Indian-made diamonds, gold jewellery, silver jewellery, platinum jewellery, and imitation jewellery in the Omani market.
The development arrives at a time when exporters are seeking new avenues for growth and market diversification. With Oman importing over a billion dollars worth of gems and jewellery annually, the market presents substantial potential for Indian manufacturers and exporters looking to expand their international footprint.
The agreement is also expected to simplify trade logistics. Historically, a significant portion of jewellery shipments destined for Oman moved through intermediary hubs, adding both time and cost to the supply chain. The new framework is expected to encourage direct trade routes, enabling faster deliveries and greater operational efficiency.
Industry participants have already begun responding to the opportunities created by the agreement, signalling strong confidence in the potential for increased trade volumes and deeper business engagement between the two countries.
Beyond jewellery, the CEPA is expected to boost trade across several sectors including engineering goods, textiles, agriculture, pharmaceuticals, and services, supporting broader economic cooperation and strengthening long-term commercial partnerships.
As businesses begin to leverage the benefits of the agreement, the India-Oman CEPA is poised to become an important catalyst for export growth, market expansion, and enhanced regional connectivity for Indian industry.
