Sawansukha Indian Institute of Jewellery, a women-led institution committed to responsible creativity, has taken a decisive step towards sustainability with its innovative “Scrap to Treasure” competition, conceptualised and executed by institute students under the guidance of experienced faculty members.
The competition challenged students to rethink waste and transform discarded materials into meaningful design pieces. All designs and final products were created exclusively using scrap items collected from streets and households including metal remnants, broken accessories, packaging waste, and everyday discarded objects. The initiative encouraged students to view waste not as an endpoint, but as the beginning of a new design narrative.
Through this hands-on exercise, students explored sustainable design thinking, material innovation, and conscious craftsmanship skills increasingly vital in the future of jewellery and design industries.
Niki Sawansukha, Principal of SIIJ and the visionary force behind the competition, emphasised the responsibility creative institutions hold in shaping a more mindful future.
“As designers and educators, we must think beyond aesthetics and profitability. We have a responsibility towards the world we live in and the generations that will follow. Sustainability is not a trend, it is a conscious choice we must make today,” said Niki Sawansukha.
The “Scrap to Treasure” competition stands as a reflection of Sawansukha group’s broader philosophy nurturing jewellery designers who are not only skilled but socially and environmentally aware. By integrating sustainability into its curriculum through real-world practice, the institute aims to inspire young designers to adopt ethical and eco-conscious approaches from the very beginning of their careers.
This initiative reinforces Sawansukha’s commitment to education with purpose, innovation with responsibility, and leadership that places long-term impact above short-term gains.
