

The Indian Institute of Gems & Jewellery (IIGJ), with support from the Gem & Jewellery Export Promotion Council (GJEPC), has introduced a new professional programme focused on the technology and business of lab-grown diamonds (LGDs).
The Certificate in Lab-Grown Diamond Technology has been developed in collaboration with the IIT Madras India Centre for Lab-Grown Diamond (InCent LGD). Spanning 90 hours, the hybrid programme is designed to give participants a comprehensive understanding of an industry that sits at the intersection of advanced technology, jewellery and global trade.
The programme combines online learning with campus-based education and is structured around evening and weekend sessions, making it accessible to working professionals and industry participants.
IIGJ will lead 30 hours of live online sessions covering the broader LGD ecosystem. Topics include the evolution of the global diamond industry, the rise of lab-grown diamonds, market dynamics, consumer behaviour, technology and commerce, entrepreneurship, international trade and exports, regulatory considerations, and emerging developments shaping the sector.
The technical component will be delivered through IIT Madras, comprising 48 hours of live online classes followed by 12 hours of on-campus learning. Participants will explore the scientific principles behind diamond formation, including graphite and diamond structures, as well as key production technologies such as High Pressure High Temperature (HPHT) and Microwave Plasma Chemical Vapour Deposition (MPCVD).
The curriculum also delves into diamond growth using MPCVD, post-growth processing and advanced methods of characterising lab-grown diamonds, giving learners insight into the production journey from scientific fundamentals to finished material.
By bringing together technical education and commercial understanding, the programme aims to equip participants with a more rounded perspective of the LGD sector — from how diamonds are grown and evaluated to how the industry operates, trades and evolves globally.
