De Beers Announces Leadership Reshuffle as COO Burger Greeff Retires
De Beers Group has announced significant leadership changes as Chief Operating Officer Burger Greeff prepares to retire at the end of 2025, concluding a remarkable 30-year tenure with the company.
Kevin Smith, currently Executive Vice President of Corporate Affairs & Strategy, will assume the position of Interim Chief Operating Officer effective 1 December 2025. Meanwhile, Eirik Waerness, Senior Vice President and Chief Economist, will take on additional duties as Acting Executive Vice President of Corporate Affairs & Strategy.
Greeff, who joined De Beers in 1993, has been instrumental in advancing the company’s technical capabilities, operational standards, and sustainability agenda. CEO Al Cook acknowledged his lasting influence, describing him as a leader defined by integrity, vision, and dedication.
Smith, a member of the De Beers leadership team since 1996, has contributed to several transformative initiatives, including the Upstream Origins strategy and the company’s broader organisational evolution.
Waerness, who became part of De Beers in 2025 following a distinguished career as Chief Economist at Equinor, will now oversee multiple portfolios encompassing Global Communications, Government Affairs, Strategy & Business Development, and Global Market and Price Analysis.
