De Beers Group, in partnership with Angola’s state-owned diamond company Endiama, has identified a previously unknown kimberlite field — marking the first such discovery anywhere in the world in more than 30 years. Kimberlite, a volcanic rock, is the primary source of natural diamonds.

The next phase will involve detailed drilling, geological surveys, and laboratory analysis to determine the type of kimberlite present and its potential for diamond production. This milestone follows two mining agreements De Beers signed with Angola in April 2022, along with a memorandum of understanding formalized at the Mining Indaba conference in February 2024.

De Beers CEO Al Cook hailed Angola as one of the most promising diamond exploration destinations globally. He credited the country’s leadership, particularly President João Lourenço, for implementing reforms that increased transparency, aligned with international mining standards, and fostered a favorable business climate — paving the way for De Beers’ return to the country in search of new diamond sources.
